Alton Towers Resort is a theme park resort based in Alton. Alton is a village based in Staffordshire,UK.
The park consists of a themepark concluding 37 rides in total, 10 of them are rollercoasters, a waterpark, a spa, a golf course, 3 hotels, huge gardens, an aquarium and many attractions along the 910 acre park. Alton Towers Resort is extremely popular, gaining over 2 million visitors per annum.

History

The park was first opened as a theme park on the 4th April 1980, and as a country estate on the 13th April 1960 by William Alexander Sidney Herbert, known as the 18th Earl of Shrewsbury. The park was originally inspired by Disneyland & was built by John Broome who first thought of turning the place into a modern theme park.
The first ever rollercoaster built there was the ‘ Corkscrew ‘, the Britain’s first two looped coaster, the corkscrew shut down in 2008 which part of the ride is now presented at the front entrance of the park painted blue to match the theming. Past rollercoasters they’ve had were Corkscrew, 4 Man Bob, Alton Mouse, Thunder Looper, The Beast and Beastie, all of which were shut down and usually replaced for todays rides.

Alton Towers Now

The resort is owned by Nick Lesalu, known as the Chairman of Prestbury Investments. Nick purchased the resort in recent years to become the official owner, the resort cost him over £620m which is being paid by rent.
The park now has 10 rollercoasters including The Smiler, holding world record for the most loops on a coaster, Nemesis, Galactica, Oblivion, Wickerman, Rita, TH13TEEN, Spinball Whizzer, Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure and the Runaway Mine Train.
Cbeebies Land is also featured on the resort welcoming little ones with slower and much less thrilling rides so it’s suitable. Cbeebies Land has its own hotel aswell, with themed rooms to add more magic for the experience.
Splash Landings is the park’s waterpark, including a relaxing lazy river, plenty exciting slides and loads of fun splashing areas. This area of the park also has a hotel, themed to go with the waterpark adding to part of the visit.
A golf course is also an attraction at Alton Towers, named ‘ Extraordinary Golf ‘, getting the name from all the unique obstacles within the course including loops and all sorts of patterns.
Alton Towers does have a main hotel with many different themed rooms, including a Smiler themed room or an explorer room.

Events

Alton Towers has many events during different holidays around the year
At Christmas they hold a ‘ Santa Sleepover ‘ event, where families tend to stay for a night at the hotel when its all decorated for Christmas and meet Santa in his grotto, it’s a magical Christmassy experience never to forget for all ages
During mid-September up to Halloween they hold events called ‘ Oktoberfest ‘ running up to Halloween which is called ‘ Scarefest ‘. Oktoberfest celebrates a German festival celebrating ‘Munich’. Scarefest celebrates Halloween & usually consists of later closing times, scary music and much more.
Alton Towers is great for family days out or short breaks.
